Orchard Expansions

With the new addition of our (bio) diesel powered walk behind tractor (a generous donation from Earthbound Farm), we have a new capability to open up new earth with ease. This Fall, we have recently tilled a new section to the north of the existing row crop area, in preparation for planting an orchard next season. Currently we have it planted with a cool season cover crop, purchased through Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply called Legume Oat Mix (15% purple vetch, 15% Lana or Namoi woolypod vetch, 15% common vetch, 40% Magnus or Biomaster winter peas, 15% oats- Montezuma, Cayuse or Otana). This crop will grow all winter, competing with weeds, fixing nitrogen, loosening the heavy soil and providing beneficial insect habitat. In the mean time, we will be researching the perfect trees for our particular site and plan on planting them bareroot in Jan/Feb '10. You can never think too far ahead in the garden !

Winter Garden

We are happy to report that the garden is finally to bed for the winter... after the usual hustle before the Thanksgiving holiday, our brassicas and root crops are firmly in place for the coming wet months... This has probably been the most successful transition between the changing seasons.
